Keynote speaker: Prof Ben Selinger, AM

As gamekeeper and poacher

Emeritus Professor Ben Selinger AM completed his honours/masters degree at the University of Sydney, followed by a doctorate at the Technical University, Stuttgart, Germany.  Ben was later awarded a Doctor of Science from the Australian National University, where he taught and researched for 35 years, combining surface chemistry and spectroscopy. Outside of his research interests, Ben is a long-standing Board Member of ‘CHOICE’, the writer of ‘Chemistry in the Marketplace’ and he was the first chair of the National Registration Authority (NRA), which is now known as the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA).

In addition, Ben has been involved with a number of community panels and commissions.  He initiated a talkback segment, Dial-a-scientist, on local ABC radio, and was a columnist–feature writer for The Canberra Times and Burke’s Backyard.  He chaired controversial investigative commissions for the ACT, NSW and federal governments including the Independent Panel on Intractable Waste, and Orica’s chlorinated waste at Botany, and supervised the first (1984) removal of asbestos insulation in the ACT.  Ben’s engagement in chemistry beyond the University environment has provided him with a unique base for seeing the chemical world through many eyes.
